What Is a Cold Start Injector

by MOU YONG HONG on December 01, 2021

The cold start injector is installed on the intake manifold, and its function is to inject fuel during the cold start of the engine to enrich the mixture and improve the cold start performance of the engine.

Since the cold start injector injects fuel into the intake manifold, there is the disadvantage of uneven fuel supply for each cylinder. The current development trend is to cancel the cold start injector, and each cylinder injector completes the task of the cold start injector, That is, the cold start performance of the engine is improved through asynchronous fuel injection, which not only makes the fuel supply of each cylinder even but also reduces the control system components (cold start injector) and simplifies the circuit.

Cold start injector function

A device that injects fuel into the intake manifold during a cold start of the engine to enrich the mixture and improve the cold start performance of the engine.

Cold start injector circuit composition

It is mainly composed of three parts: starting circuit, cold injector, and thermal time limit switch.

Thermal time limit switch

The function is to control the injection time of the cold injector.

There is a bimetallic piece with an electric heating coil inside, which controls the opening and closing of the contacts according to its own temperature. There are two conditions for changing the temperature: one is the water temperature, and the other is the heating wire.

For example: at -20°C, the maximum open duration is 7.5s. As the temperature rises, the open duration will gradually decrease. When the temperature reaches 35°C, the switch is always open and the injector stops fueling.

Circuit detection

When the cold injector is not working, it will be difficult to start the cold car in winter.

1). Cross the LED lights on the two lines of the fuel injector. They should be on when starting, and the maximum time is 6-8s. If they are not on, check the power supply and thermal time limit switch.

2) If the light is on, always remove the fuel injector from the manifold, connect it to the line and put it in the oil basin, and start the car, you should see the foggy fuel spray, otherwise clean or replace the spray. What is a cold start fuel injection Device?

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages: It can improve the difficulty of engine cold start to a certain extent.

Disadvantages: Since the cold-start injector injects oil into the intake manifold, there is the disadvantage of uneven oil supply for each cylinder.

Since a cold start injector will deteriorate over time, you should understand the symptoms it will emit before replacing it.

Signs that a cold start injector needs to be replaced include:

When your foot is off the accelerator pedal, the engine will not run
When trying to start the engine, the engine will not start or stop
The engine will flood when trying to start the engine
The vehicle cannot start at all
If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should ask a qualified mechanic to solve your problem.
